Golf Legend Launches Golf Website In Birr
The golfer Christy O'Connor Jnr, winner of back to back British Opens and Ryder cup legend, who is fondly remembered for his stunning two iron shot to within four feet on the last hole at the Belfry, officially launched a new innovative golf website at a reception held last Friday night in the County Arms Hotel Birr.
The website entitled www.golfcoursevisualtour.com is a local entrepreneurial concept initiated by Birr's own Greg Smith and his partners, that takes the visitor on a hole by hole visual tour of Irish golf courses.
As guest of honour Christy O'Connor Jnr remaked Golf Course Visual Tours brings a fresh and exciting way to view golf courses throughout Ireland, presenting the layout of the course including hazards, contours and greens with top tips on how to approach each hole from the local experts.
Christy O'Connor Jnr pointed out that the website enables the golfer or golfing group to have a unique view of the course and area before going to book. 'There is no more guess work. The golfer can decide very quickly which course is most suitable to him/her and his partners. Amateur, group, society and indeed the professional will benefit. The golfer can now afford to be more adventurous in his/her choice of where to play because you know what to expect and what is on offer. In these economic climes I can think of no better opportunity to promote the golf club and course. I have seen many gimmicks in golf in my time and I have always steered well clear of them but from the outset I knew this concept was one that I could gladly associate my name with. It is the perfect asset for both the golfer and the clubs. No wonder that some 40 golf clubs, including clubs from Dublin, Sligo and the West have already stated their interest.'
Mr O'Connor, who has personally designed over 17 golf courses in Ireland alone and several abroad in Portugal, emphasised the website's winning qualities. 'This is one of the simplest and singularly best ideas that I have seen in the golf world. It will enable touring groups both professional and amateur alike to get a real insight and perspective of the course before choosing where to go and play. What is brilliant here is that the Golf Course Visual Tour website is free to both the club and web user alike. It will be available to a worldwide audience. The website is simple to navigate, concise and provides every detail you need to know before your fourball, society or group make that final decision. The fact is no one else has done this. The golf courses that are on board and those that are coming on board will see the benefit as will local businesses.'
Present on the night were Presidents and Captains from various golf clubs including amongst others Castle Barna, Tullamore, Esker Hills and Birr. Acting MC John Irwin introduced both Birr Golf Club Captain Bernard Kennedy and President Dave McDowell who echoed the words of the legendary Christy O'Connor regarding this new golfing website. Also present on the night was a display from Birr Golf Shop and Driving range provided by Michael Horan and local Professionals Kevin McGrath and Paul McCanny. Birr Golf Shop unveiled their new custom fitting facility with Trackman radar technology as used by the BBC.
Speaking at the launch, Greg Smith stated that Golf Course Visual Tour is a see before you play website bringing golf to the viewer with nothing to do but sit back, watch and listen. 'Select a golf course of your choice and begin the tour which uses voiceover and overlays to describe all the various hazards, hills, contours etc.
'The tour concludes by giving you a look at what other facilities are available at that club including bar and restaurant etc. But it goes much further providing information on local services, amenities, from entertainment to accommodation, restaurants and other business outlets. Links to places of interest will be provided. This information invariably saves you time and makes it easier to complete your bookings'.
Mr Smith added, 'We offer a variety of options for advertising on our site which will be viewed by an international audience of golf enthusiasts and potential visitors to your area. Choices range from business card, skyscraper and banner adverts.'
Mr Smith stated that the idea for this website started back in 2008 in Portugal. 'It was a golf holiday that has now turned into a business venture.' After playing three rounds of golf on three different courses Greg realised that he might have saved a few shots if only he knew what was around the next dogleg left or right. Better still he might have chosen and decided all this had he been able to view the courses online before departing. 'We all have that little bit of a competitive streak in our mind before we stand up on the first tee, whether it's just a friendly game of singles or that little wager put on the side between a fourball.' After some research it dawned on Greg that nothing comparable to a see before you play website existed and after a little bit more research Greg got more involved and started to believe in his novel idea.
