The Mayakoba Golf Classic made golf history when it became the first PGA TOUR event to ever be contested outside of the United States and Canada in February 2007. After four years of steady growth, México’s Only PGA TOUR Event is regarded as one of the finest on TOUR. Players rave about El Camaleón Golf Club as a competitive venue and about the Mayakoba Resort as an ideal location to bring their families.
With the wonders of the Riviera Maya and Cancún regions, the beauty of the Mayakoba resort and the warmth and hospitality of the Mexican people, the Mayakoba Golf Classic is poised for its best year ever when 132 pro golfers descend upon Playa del Carmen for the 2011 edition of México's Only PGA TOUR Event.
Cameron Beckman won the 2010 Mayakoba Golf Classic for his third PGA TOUR title, closing with a 4-under 67 in the final round for a two-stroke victory over Brian Stuard and third-round leader Joe Durant.
2010 saw the Mayakoba Golf Classic welcome record crowds and a fierce competition for the winner's share of the $3.6 million USD purse. The 40-year-old Beckman, three strokes behind Durant at the start of the final round, finished at 15-under 269. The title marks Beckman's third career PGA TOUR victory; his previous championships came in 2001 and 2008.
"I'm cruising along playing and, all of a sudden, I know I'm tied for the lead," Beckman said. "That makes you nervous. Now you know you've got a chance to win and you've really got to tighten up and concentrate. You know, a lot of things go through your mind. Winning out here is tough. There's really no easy way to do it. I've done it a couple different ways now, but it's a great feeling."
What was the key to the victory?
"Without question, putting," Beckman said. "I mean, I hit the ball well, also, but this is probably the best I've putted in a long time. Probably since the last time I won. I just put a new putter in play two weeks ago, and just absolutely putted beautifully on these greens. Just a beautiful week of putting."
